Ants

Ants are social insects of the family Formicidae and, along with wasps and bees, are the order Hymenoptera. There are an estimated 22,000 species of which have registered more than 12,500. Easily distinguished from the hinged masts and distinctive structure of their bodies as well as those parts are combined with small joints and the waist is very thin.

Ants form colonies that vary in size from a few dozen predators living in small natural cavities to highly organized societies that cover large areas and consist of millions of members. These larger colonies consist mostly of sterile wingless females forming classes “workers”, “soldiers”, or other specialized groups. Almost all ant colonies have some fertile males called drones and one or more fertile females called queens. The colonies are sometimes described as a superorganism because the ants appear to behave like a single being, as they work together to support the colony.

The honey ants store food to prevent colony in danger of starvation.

Ants thrive in almost all ecosystems, and are perhaps 15-25 % of the biomass of terrestrial animals. Their success in so many environments has been attributed to their social organization and their ability to modify habitats, exploit resources and defend. All colonies exhibit division of labor, communication between individuals, and ability to solve complex problems. These parallels with human societies have been an inspiration and subject of study.
